I am Thankful For the Bible

“Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.” (Acts 8:35 NKJV)

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV)

The Written Word tells us of the Living Word
John tells us that the “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14 NKJV).”  This reference is clearly a reference to the Lord Jesus.  He is not only the message from God, He is the vehicle that conveys that message.  We have seen God when we see the Lord Jesus.  I see One who did miracles to prove He was Who He claimed to be.  I see one Who says He loved me and then proved it by bearing the punishment that I deserved because of my sins.

The Written Word is Scripture
The whole Bible as we have it is Scripture.  The word scripture usually means sacred or authoritative writings.  The Bible is our book of instructions from God Himself.  I believe that and I could spend a lot of time explaining why I believe that.  But I will not do that today.

God has given us a full revelation of Himself.  He reveals what we need to know of the past and of the present and of the future.  When the Word was made flesh, that revelation became personal.  Since God has no reason to lie and says He cannot lie, I believe the Bible.  It tells me a lot about judgment with regard to those who will not worship the One true God.  There will be judgment of nations; but, more importantly, there will be judgment on individuals.  I believe God when He says, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him  (John 3:36 NKJV).”

Since the Scripture is divinely inspired, we can view it as God speaking to us.  We do not take letters from those we love and read them once and throw them away.  We read them over and over again, particularly if our loved one lives at a distance or wrote the letters and then passed into eternity.  We cherish those letters.  I view the Bible that way.  Before I was saved, I read it because I had to, but it seemed to be mysterious, and what I understood seemed to condemn me.  When I trusted in the truth that God said Christ had died to save me, the Bible became a different book.  Now it seemed to tell me of God’s love and of the plans that He had for me presently and in eternity.  Now I read the Bible (Scriptures) rejoicing in its promises for me personally and grieving for those who will one day experience the wrath of God for rejecting God’s offer of mercy through the death, burial and resurrection of His Son.

Today, there is very little that I can believe.  People lie intentionally and unintentionally.  But God’s promises are certain.  I believe them.  More than that I believe in them.

The Bible is one thing I am thankful for this time of the year.
